aren’t the data items updating automatically when you modify the wiki page template? I thought this would be the case…
No, they do not.
But with infobox parameters filed they can be ignored (though if infobox parameter is missing sadly sometimes it is necessary to edit data item, for example if it contains bogus “requires” data).

Can someone help verifying the last 120 wiki pages whose status is in draft?
thinking about it, maybe we should have an “outdated” status for translations?
Category:Feature descriptions with incorrect status value - OpenStreetMap Wiki now has 101 value (link to make it easier to find)
We have Template:Out of date - OpenStreetMap Wiki
That is status of wiki page, not of tag, so it should not be conflated with tag status
Specifically for translations we also have Template:Translation_out_of_sync and Template:Translation_not_complete.
