Choosing areas to prioritize for street-level imagery in Montreal / En choisissant les lieux à prioriser pour les photos aux niveau de la rue à Montréal

(Le français suite)

Hello, Montreal mappers!

I have recently purchased a GoPro Max and intend on taking 360° street-level imagery in the city. Right now, I am trying to make a list of areas to prioritize. Here are my current criteria:

  • The area has a high density of POI, or
  • The area has undergone construction recently and no other imagery exists to update it from, or
  • The area cannot be mapped from aerial imagery, due to trees or other obstructions

I’m working on a visual list here, focusing on Rosemont, Le Plateau, and Ville-Marie to start. If you have any suggestions for areas that fit this criteria that I have missed, please let me know.

Also, in order to facilitate projects that others are working on, I am also asking that if anyone has an area that they could make use of updated street-level imagery, please let me know! I will try to get there to take some for you as soon as I can. But please keep in mind that I can only travel on foot, by bike, or by transit, so remote areas may not be feasible.

All imagery I take will be uploaded to Mapillary.

I think it’s also important to include pedestrian areas frequented by tourists. Especially the promenade at the old port, but also the Belvederes on the mountain, Parc La Fontaine, Parc Olympique, Marché Atwater, etc.

I have added them to the list. The Botanical Garden in particular I already go to quite often, but looking at their website it seems like I should ask permission before taking images there.

Mapping the underground RESO footpaths would be great, even if we do not have the GPS coordinates. We could find a way to map these correctly in OSM using landmarks along the ways.

Could you point those out to me on the map? I assume you’re talking about the underground mall type things I’ve been in around Station Bonaventure?

The first sequence of test images has been uploaded. Quality looks good! I’ll continue doing walks as the weather gets nicer.

i think taking street photos of the new school (École Secondaire Lasalle) in Lasalle would be great since it was newly constructed and all imagery aren’t up to date.

Bad luck, I was in that area yesterday but totally forgot about the school. I’ve marked it on my to-do list now, and I have to go back to get images for a few streets with a lot of shops, so I’ll do it while I’m back there. I also marked that one park you have a note on about the basketball court having been redone. If there are any other spots in the Verdun/Lasalle area please let me know, and I will do them as part of that trip. I’ll have a bicycle, so distance from transit is not a factor.

In more general news, I am now very close to finishing all the areas I had originally marked to do in the Rosemont/Hochelaga/Ville-Marie/Plateau area! I have been using these to update the POI and add street furniture to those areas as I can. Currently working on a big batch along Boulevard Saint-Laurent.

I have a day off next week to do the Jardin Botanique while it is hopefully nice and quiet. Parc du Mont-Royal will be a big project, and one I don’t think 360° imagery will help much with. There seem to be a lot of defunct paths on the map, so for that I think that being on the ground with StreetComplete will be the best way forward. I would appreciate help with that, as I have a somewhat limited walking range due to a chronic health issue. Making notes on paths that don’t exist, and taking photos of any staircases you come across that need to be split would be the two biggest things for that area.

There’s another area i forgot to mention which had recently painted bicycle paths, it’s at the end of 90e Avenue to the river, near École Secondaire Cavelier de Lasalle, Although i forgot how long it was but definitely something worth checking. (sorry for late reply but i don’t check community OSM often)
