Firefox because its the only without google with Violentmonkey. Tampermonkey is not open source. Greasemonkey and Violentmonkey are good choices as far as i’m aware
in 0.8.9, links to Overpass Turbo don’t work. Fixed in 0.9. Also fixed error when pressing alt
+ J
Lyrical retreat:
While I was doing the support of photos from Mapillary, I noticed that there are many objects with the same mapillary/panoramax=*
tags.

https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/panoramax#values
I think someone might be interested in fixing them.
Hmm, interesting. These are in my area so I can tackle them when I have some free time. From a quick glance at the element histories, it looks like maybe someone intended to link a sequence and that got converted to an image when Mapillary updated its IDs, but I’m not sure. Regardless, good thing to put into a review queue. I might make it a MapRoulette challenge.
Edit: Updated those pictured ones in Ballard in Changeset: 163078586
Overpass Search not working here.
Both “/” and Shift-“/” are opening the FF-Quickfind frame.
Do I have to activate the “experimental features” somewhere?
keyboard: german.
There is a most important shortcut not working (for me), the one where you can toggle the geometry view on and off. At least in latest Firefox 135.0.1 it does nothing. Maybe it’s my Italian keyboard, on mine the character below the question-mark is '. At least I cannot find ` (copy pasted from TrickyFoxy post)
Would suggest if there are shortcuts for any of the items on the settings page to suffix these shortcuts in brackets to the item (…)
oh, various layouts…
Did this work in the previous version of the script, or did it break in 0.9?
As a temporary solution to the dev version I added an alias for '
. Does this work on your keyboard layout? Please note that this key does not switch the script settings, but only removes/restore objects from the map.
I’m going to make customization of hotkeys, you can follow here:
Customizable keyboard shortcuts · Issue #198 · deevroman/better-osm-org · GitHub if you know good examples of key settings interfaces — you can share them.
Actually it never worked for me since your announcement of that shortcut. Failed to report that before, the char just not available, tried onscreen keyboards with different languages… don’t see it anywhere.
. The objective is to hide the geometry outlining i.e. what I see. The settings switch would then become quasi redundant, suppose you have to set it to ‘on’ before the toggle works.
Tried ’ but the apostrophe (shift+?) only does zoom out for me in FF
I also can’t get it to work.
Using standard QWERTY English keyboard and Bulgarian BDS keyboard. I’ve tried all /
with and without Shift
but it all of them open Firefox’s search in page thingy.
Firefox + TamperMonkey
osm.org now shows the number of changes in the changesets, which has broken a script a little:
I corrected compatibility in v0.9.1: 0 are now hiding, and the pencil icon is replaced by a less confusing:
And slightly improved the viewing of the history of tags: now the script shows the previous value of the tag:
Alt + click on the <time>
element now opens augmented diffs
in Overpass Turbo. And I hope the script has become more stable (especially in Chrome)
p.s. osm.org update also brought it possible to copy the link to the comment
p.p.s. Let me know if someone uses FireMonkey and wants the script to support it
I added better-osm-org to the web front end page on the OSM Wiki, as suggested by @ivanbranco
(Edit: fix Wiki link)
@chris66 @SekeRob can you check if this works in 0.9.1?
@chris66 make sure that the “Add hotkeys” checkbox is checked in the script settings.
In any case, open the browser console (F12), enable the Debug logging level, click on the map and press the keys. Show what you see in the console when you press the keys /
, ~
, '
, shift + /
Shift-/ not working yet.
How to get the first frame (with “all levels”) ?
OOPS, in 0.9.1 I broke shift
+ /
this even for all Wait a few minutes
Update to 0.9.2. https://github.com/deevroman/better-osm-org/raw/refs/heads/master/better-osm-org.user.js You don’t need to enable debug logs anymore, just open console
The last attempt before I leave for a month to study the keyboard layouts :D
. I hope at least one of the hotkeys in the line will work at 0.9.3:
`
,~
,'
should hide objects on the mapshift
+/
,shift
+\
,shift
+NumpadDivide
open the search
It seems that only setting up hotkeys will help me cope with different layouts. (upd: or Buttons on the map to control the display of map items · Issue #214 · deevroman/better-osm-org · GitHub) I naively assumed that shift
+ /
would be convenient, because these keys are close on the keyboard:
I wonder how JOSM handles a bunch of layouts
p.s. TIL, that the -
+
keys may not be located next to each other.
Ultra weird, was looking for the tilde key which used to be on my English keyboard but not on my Italian (always forget where it is so use the on-screen keyboard), and found on reddit it’s the key left of the 1 key on the number row combined with shift. That key shows \ & |. Surprise, shift + \ or | if you will, since that is what gets typed testing in the Ascii notepad, toggles the augment geometry enhancement on/off, AFTER setting the BOO options for ‘Show Geometry’ to on. When off, the toggle does not work. Happy as clam on this part.
The ’ key launches ‘quick find’ in me Firefox, now v136, same as Ctrl+f
PS, enjoy your keyboard study on the one that has the keys sorted in pinyin.

If I may give you a hint, just switch to the German keyboard, it lets you even type capital letters with accents, which are not needed in German but in Italian and not easily achieved on the Italian keyboard, À,È etc.
