Is it necessary to put (CC-BY-SA 2.0) on this file? On Wikimedia the Openstreetmap license says “This map was created from OpenStreetMap project data, collected by the community.”
That’s simply not true or it’s only half the truth. It would be better to state that OSM data is used, among other data.
So how is a map like this to be attributed on Wikimedia?
Any screenshot of Standard tiles taken since the 2012 ODbL migration should be tagged with the {{ODbL OpenStreetMap}} template, which provides attribution and information about the nuanced licensing situation for OpenStreetMap Carto tiles on openstreetmap.org. Many file description pages for OSM-based maps use the {{OpenStreetMap}} template, which supplies this attribution, provides a place for additional map-related metadata, and adds the file to a tracking category.
Since both files were created since August 2020, they don’t require a separate {{cc-by-sa-2.0}} template, but the {{cc-zero}} template needs to be accompanied by the ODbL template or some other attribution of OSM, even if some additional data is overlaid. If there’s any risk of confusion, the attribution can clarify which parts of the image came from OSM.
(For completeness, Wikimedia Commons also has an {{OpenHistoricalMap}} template for maps derived from OpenHistoricalMap. Though the OHM project generally doesn’t require attribution, providing attribution as a courtesy avoids concerns about plagiarism.)
Thanks guys, I will update the 20 or so maps I uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
I cannot believe that I’m the only one that uploaded maps to Wikimedia so other mappers will like to have this clear as well.
