Hi all, a quick announcement that OSM Ohio kicks off today on Wednesday July 19th 2023 at 7pm for a virtual meetup (linked from the event below). This is an informal Meetup that may involve some general GIS chat, update of any projects people are working on, what we might work on to make Ohio’s map better through coordination, and could include OSM mapping.
The event is posted on OSMCal and you can RSVP with your OSM account. Notes and other outcomes will be posted to the OSM Wiki - Ohio - OpenStreetMap Wiki for those wanting to follow along.
Hi Jonathan,
I am in SE Ohio and need some help uploading files for a local non-profit land trust, Athens Conservancy. Do you know how I might find someone to help me with conversion of ArcGIS files to OSM files and uploading? Grateful any help at all.
KateKelley
Unfortunately, it is not as simple as “convert and upload”, for example the new data and the existing data will have to be deconflicted, and where appropriate connected to other existing features. The community is here to help.
We have another online meetup coming up on October 9. If you’re able to attend, it would be a great opportunity to introduce yourself to some of the local mappers and come up with a plan for importing your data into OSM.
(Side note: Since this thread began, we’ve merged the Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania meetups into a “Midwest” meetup.)
Hey! Short answer, yes! I actually work in Athens a few days a week if you want to meet up in person, but I’m happy to setup a virtual meeting. I’m the Data Services Librarian at Ohio University. You’re definitely welcome at the next virtual Midwest meetup as well.
I have a lot planned for work various Lands with OpenStreetMap and Wikidata. I tried to compile a list of public lands in Ohio. See: Ohio/Public lands - OpenStreetMap Wiki too you might want to see if they’re listed there.
We’re also having some presentations on OSM at Ohio University’s GIS Day November 18th.
Feel free to message me directly for contact or reach out to me via my Ohio University contact.
