I couldn’t find any tagging for these things on the wiki or taginfo, specifically knife bins.
How about amenity=amnesty_bin
+ amnesty_bin=knife
?

Seems like a plan, consistent with other types of bins.
Sounds like an easy case for a proposal so it can get that nice “approved” mark on the Wiki
What “other types”? Why not simply =waste_basket
+ Key:waste_basket - OpenStreetMap Wiki (which should otherwise use bin=yes
) =amnesty
+ waste=knives
. The latter-most is what 3 are already using, 2 of them clear.
name=Knife Amnesty Bin
Node: Knife Amnesty Bin (11808359645) | OpenStreetMapname=Bin a Blade
Node: Bin a Blade (10221297023) | OpenStreetMapAnother unclear misspelling =knifes
Node: 11932629568 | OpenStreetMap
Or as a compromise, =amnesty_bin
+ waste=knives
to at least reuse waste=
. There can be waste=
=drugs
etc for them. There’s no need reinvent the list of waste=
in amnesty_bin=
.
waste_basket=
/ amnesty_bin=
can instead be used for the purpose of =sports
etc, if they are permanent. They may not be located inside the area of that facility, lacking spatial relationship to be identified.
We already have
amenity=waste_basket
amenity=waste_disposal
amenity=recycling
for different types of bins.
I do tentatively agree with waste=
being reused though.
As we’ve already got three examples tagged as amenity=waste_basket + waste=knives, why not go with that?
The largest operator of them in London appears to be Word 4 Weapons, so maybe it would be worth creating Wikidata and Name Suggestion Index entries for them and asking if they’re willing to release their location list under an OSM-compatible licence?
Good points, but using amenity=waste_basket
feels a bit like troll tagging as it’s assumed to be a POI where general pedestrian waste can be disposed. Very few data consumers display the types of waste, let alone properly interpret them.
amenity=amnesty_bin
+waste=knives
seems good i’ll work on a NSI entry
If you say that, you have a problem with the 65k waste=
that’s not waste=trash
. The leading 20k =dog_excrement
isn’t even human waste.
