adding node (point) locations and types

Hi. I’m new to editing in OSM and have a few questions I have some coordinates for public places that my field team collected for some villages in Guatemala that are not on OSM. I’m trying to trace the roads in the satellite photo and then add the points.

  1. I would love to import the points automatically but I can’t figure out how to do that (I tried converting the coordinates from csv or kml to gpx but it didn’t seem to work. Is there a way to do this?

  2. For the moment, I’m just adding the points by hand by searching the coordinates in OSM, then comparing to the satellite image when I plot the points in Google Maps to get approximately the right roof. Because I’m not being very exact, I’m plotting as points rather than areas. When I try to save them, I have options of things like churches and restaurants, but not schools or government/administrative buildings or bus stops. Right now I’m putting them as “point” and then putting the name in the description, but is there a way to add a new category, like official building or transportation?

Thank you

celeste

It sounds like you are using the wrong editor. JOSM has direct access to most of the satellite and aerial imagery that it is legal to use in OSM and you can trace directly.

Also, it has a wide range of templates, including plugins adding specialist templates. Although I haven’t tried, adding your own custom templates should not be too difficult.

Thank you.

I am trying NOT to trace, but to import the lat and long that our team collected. I don’t know the villages well enough myself to recognize particular features for small buildings like shops.

I think I figured out how to import them in JOSM but haven’t managed to save them. (I don’t know what I’m doing wrong but I can’t get past the OAuth. I type in the same username and password I used for OSM but it doesn’t accept it.)

I also couldn’t figure out how to edit the description of the points or other info in JOSM, e.g. to classify buildings. I thought I could do that in OSM, but first I’ll need to upload them.

Forum accounts are distinct from mapping accounts, although I think there is a facility to synchronise them.
