Adding Motorcycle categories Suitability to smoothness=* wiki

Aiming to enhance OSM tagging support tailored for motorcycle users.

This, I believe, would be a good categorization to add to the wiki table:

smoothness motorcycle categories
good sport motorcycles
intermediate cruiser/touring motorcycles
bad commuter/standard motorcycles
very_bad adventure motorcycles
horrible dual-sport motorcycles
very_horrible enduro motorcycles (remove Trial)

Unlike enduro bikes, trial bikes can tackle most conditions where other off-road vehicles fail and ideally belong in a lower category.

However, using smoothness=impassable would be misleading, as trial motorcycles are not intended for trails anyway, much like the motocross category. Therefore, I would exclude them from the current smoothness=very_horrible description.

Your thoughts ?

I have no experience in motorbikes, so canā€™t judge your categorisation. Maybe the different types of motorbikes need an explanation (and a picture)?

Which tagging practice for smoothness did you take into account? The one based on the table on the main smoothness wiki page or the one based on the smoothness gallery? See Revision of Smoothness Gallery

It looks pretty good, altho Iā€™m not so sure about the better half of the tags. Iā€™ve been riding a 200+ kg adventure bike (T7) and a 140 kg dual sport (WRR) and tagging the unpaved roads in that manner. I donā€™t think a long description of each is necessary, but a weight would be helpful. I think the term ā€˜enduroā€™ is not consistently used. Perhaps dirt bike, or trail bike are the common terms in my part of the world.
Itā€™s obviously subjective and depends on the skill of the rider, but thereā€™s no way around that.

I donā€™t base my opinion so much on the pictures, but from the descriptions and my experience with USFS and USGS maps which use the terms ā€˜high clearanceā€™, and 4wd. very_bad = high clearance, horrible = 4wd, very_horrible= bad 4wd.

smoothness motorcycle categories
very_bad adventure motorcycles (>180kg)
horrible dual-sport motorcycles (< 180kg)
very_horrible Trail motorcycles (<130kg, very capable offroad suspension) (remove Trial)

A link to Wikipedia should sufficeā€”Iā€™d expect motorcycle enthusiasts to already be familiar with the category of bike they own. Personally, Iā€™m not well-versed in the different types of mountain bikes or bicycles, but Iā€™ve never needed to look it up either.

I definitely referred to the main wiki pageā€”I wasnā€™t even aware of the sub-page. Honestly, Iā€™d prefer having all the useful information consolidated in one place.

I completely agreeā€”weight is a big deal. Your recommendations look good!

In my area, itā€™s more about ā€œEnduro.ā€ According to Wikipedia, ā€œdirt bikesā€ can include motocross, trials, and dual-sport, so we could simply stick with ā€œTrail/Enduro motorcycles.ā€

very_bad adventure motorcycles (>180kg)
horrible dual-sport motorcycles (< 180kg)
very_horrible trail/enduro motorcycles (<130kg, highly capable off-road suspension) [remove Trial]
