Dear South African OSM Community,
We’re excited to introduce a new MapRoulette challenge: MapRoulette focused on enhancing airport classifications across South Africa. This initiative aims to add missing aerodrome types to airports, ensuring they are accurately categorized as International, Regional, or Airfield.
By improving this data, we can support travelers, logistics companies, and developers with reliable information for navigation, planning, and development purposes.
The tasks were created by identifying airports in OSM without aerodrome type tags using an Overpass query. We then compared this data with OurAirports to classify each airport based on its size and importance. The classification suggests that:
- Large airports are typically International.
- Medium airports are likely Regional.
- Small airports are generally Airfields.
Your local insights are crucial to this effort! Join us in making a meaningful impact by participating in this challenge. Together, we can ensure South Africa’s airport data is accurate and comprehensive.
Thank you for your contributions, and happy mapping!
