3D imagery slow in JOSM

I find it very helpful to use 3D/Lidar imagery layer (USGS 3D elevation program) in JOSM for tracing waterways. Starting about a month ago, the layer loads very slowly, sometimes working without issue, sometimes never loading all the way. Other layers work without issues.

  • I tried: right-click and load specific tiles, error tiles, flush tiles and reload.

  • I tried changing JSOM preferences, WMS from the default 3 down to 1 simultanous connection.

  • The issue seems to be worse during US evening times, but sometines morning too. OSMers overloading the imagery servers? Something on my/client side?

  • Is there a way to check on server status?

  • Does the server throttle by IP?

  • Is there a way to see tile load progress in JOSM?

  • Is there a place to report this - is this JOSM or imagery issue?

Thanks!

Looking at the JOSM imagery preferences the layer appears to directly connect to elevation.nationalmap.gov. That’s probably the best place to start to see if they have any published policies.

It does seem a little sluggish on my computer.
