I think we’ve previously established that common sense would have us bend the physical separation principle to accommodate a whole virtual traffic island, especially if the geometry is nonobvious or there’s some obstruction inside, no matter how small its footprint. This solitary stop sign has stood as my high water mark of absurdity for some time:
But then I remembered that I regularly pass by another solitary stop sign that seemingly demands similar treatment:
The tail is wagging the dog quite vigorously with such a long stretch of dual carriageway. But it’s weird in the real world too.
