Wiki API problems?

I am not able to change my changes in the Wiki, I always get the error message that the server does not respond:

The Recent Changes page indicates that I may be not the only one with the problem?

It looks like two of your edits to the payment:*=* article did go through. You may have seen a timeout because the article is so complex that it takes upwards of 20 seconds to render for viewing, let alone for the visual editor. All those national flag icons are contributing significantly to the slowdown. Replacing them with emoji flags could help speed up the page, though tables and tag references are also suspected to perform poorly across the wiki.

In a bit of a side track — do you know of a system that could be used to allow {{Flag char}} to accept country names (like what {{Flagicon}} does) in addition to ISO codes? That would allow the template to be used as more or less a drop-in replacement for {{Flagicon}}, making it easier to transition pages like this one.

We’d have to add a large lookup table to Module:Char - OpenStreetMap Wiki, but we could just manually replace the flags on this page by replacing the country names with ISO country codes.

Yeah, that’s what I thought of doing, but backed off because it would require quite a bit of manual work mapping the country names to codes
