Why is the name of a museum not displayed when defined as an Area (vs Point)?

Dear all,

a museum can typically be defined as a Point or an Area. But if it is defined as an Area, its name is not displayed in the Standard OSM map, nor in the Organic Maps app, even at the maximum zoom level. When the museum is defined as a Point, then its name is correctly displayed.

Is this a bug?

Both museums in this screenshot of the Standard map are defined as areas, and their names are displayed as you can see:

I wonder if the issue in your example is a clash with the name of the school which overlaps a lot with the museum, or maybe the names of the ways that cross it.

Thanks, you are probably right.

Since I’m new here, what is the next step? Would you consider this a display bug? If yes, what is the procedure to notify it?

In principle issues with the Standard layer can be reported on this issue tracker

I don’t use Organic Maps but they probably have something similar.

However, I wouldn’t report this myself. There are already several open issues about labelling and I don’t know if this example is new or would be solved by one of those. Generally labelling things is not easy and it’s common enough for some names to not appear just due to bad luck related to surrounding objects.

No se trata de un error, sino del resultado de la representación del renderizador. Ten en cuenta que OSM es una base de datos de la que los proveedores de mapas seleccionan qué quieren mostrar y cómo quieren hacerlo. En tu caso, tal y como ya ha señalado @alan_gr, es probable que el nombre (muy largo) del museo entre en conflicto con los nombres «más importantes» del colegio y de los caminos. Otros mapas muestran el nombre, al menos el anterior, que era más corto. Sin embargo, dependiendo del renderizador, pueden pasar varios días hasta que los cambios sean visibles en sus mapas. Para ver las diferentes representaciones, utiliza la barra lateral derecha y ve haciendo clic en las distintas opciones.

Actually, that’s a link to the bus stop near the museum(!). The name of the bus stop appears.

The museum itself is here. I suspect that the problem is that the name is quite long since it was edited 16 hours ago (“Real Fábrica de Cristales de La Granja”) and the number of zoom levels supported by OSM Carto is very limited (only up to 19), so that name would always clash with something (zoom in and out and you’ll see).

Within the constraints that it has (the long name and the lack of zoom levels) OSM Carto is doing the best that it can. A couple of the other maps at osm.org show it (although some haven’t updated to the new name yet, and Shortbread doesn’t show museums at all).
