Which tag for a multisport pitch?

Which tag would you use for a multisport pitch with a surrounding fence, which is becoming increasingly common in city centres, like the ones shown on this page ?

leisure=pitch + sport=multi (or sport=football;basketball) seems not specific enough since it could also be a pitch in a schoolyard. Adding barrier=fence seems strange to me because it would seem to indicate that it is not accessible? I’m looking for something more specific to these public multi-use pitches, which would make them easy to find in OSM.

Why not tag the whole area including the running track as a MP with

leisure=sports_centre + sport=multi

Additionally the running track separately + the pitch separately with sport=soccer;basketball. And additionally any other object being part of this facility.

Of course you can also map the fence + the entrance into the pitch and tag it with access=yes.

I do not see any reason why this should not be working for such urban multi sport facilities if it works for a large sport stadium similarly.

that’s exactly my question: can we tag them differently so that an OSM data consumer can make the difference?

Is the difference not represented by the size of the object? Even a big city will not provide hundreds of these facilities so it should be quite easy to distinguish.

Nevertheless I think these small sized multi sport facilities are also called “game court” in english, see Game Court in Wikipedia. The use of this term would offer opportunities for a specific tagging like

leisure=game_court (instead of sports_centre) or
leisure=sports_centre + sports_centre=game_court

My vote would go for the first option but probably some more participants will add their thoughts.

game_court value sounds very good to me, thanks, I hadn’t been able to find this English term.(in France, we use the trademarked term city stade …).

But on which element would you put this value ?

  • in the case of the above picture, it’s quite clear to me, I understand you propose to draw a polygon leisure=game_court surrounding the way leisure=track and the polygon leisure=pitch, right ?
  • but in the most commom case with only the pitch ? Would you replace the leisure=pitch by the leisure=game_court ? This seems strange to me because the pitch would ‘disappear’ from tiles and OSM based maps until consumers learn to take this value into account, right ?

I wonder if we could create the pitch=* key ? I totally understand that pitch=* is not recommended because of the possible mix-up with the sport=* key. But here, this zone is really defined by the topology of the pitch, not by the sports that can be played there, so leisure=pitch + pitch=games_court + sport=* would seem to me perfectly suited.

This is exactly the same for skateparks. Today they are identified by all possible combinations of skateboard, roller_skating, bmx, … values in the sport=* key. But the topology of the pitch (with half-pipes, handrails, etc) seems to me a better definition than all the possible sports you can practice on it, so leisure=pitch + pitch=skatepark + sport=* would be appropriate.

Would it be possible to create the pitch=* key with just 2 recommended values: game_court and skatepark?

I’m not surprised you didn’t find it. As a native English speaker, I had never heard this term. Online searching seems to find most usage by U.S. commercial operators selling/installing these facilities.

I note that the Wikipedia description says that “The surface of a game court—as opposed to simply playing on concrete or asphalt—is designed for safe play and to reduce injury.” Would the proposed OSM tag be restricted to specific surfaces?

It’s also not clear to me if the running track in the photo would be part of the “game court” or it would only refer to the fenced area.

On the French forum, somebody proposed MUGA (Multi-Use Games Area)

I’m not a native English speaker, is MUGA used specifically for this type of urban fenced pitch? Or could it refer to any kind of multi use pitch, in a schoolyard for example?

It’s widely used in the UK - no idea if it is/was a trade name of some sort.

I’d also struggle to descrribe most MUGAs as “sports centres” - they’re usually just one pitch, used for multiple sports. This one is a bit of an exception in that it has a “running track” around the outside.

Perfect, so I propose to (tag the track separately and) tag the pitch itself:

//for retrocompatibility and consistency with pitches already in OSM:
leisure=pitch
sport=*
//for identification that this pitch has a specific configuration:
pitch=muga

OK ?

What is the specific configuration? How would a mapper know when to add this tag to a multi sport pitch, and when not to?

No, use sport=multi - that’s one of the most commonly used sports according to taginfo.

An alternative would be to actually list the sports, semicolon-separated. Some combinations are supported by some projects, and I’m sure others just used the first part of the tag before the semicolon.

That does have some use.

sorry if I wasn’t clear, that’s exactly what I meant when I wrote sport=*

:sweat_smile: It does have some use … since yesterday and this changeset after the parallel discussion on the French forum! My aim with this discussion was to validate the choice proposed on the French forum, and I think that’s now been done!
