Which are the initial categories we want to enable? Which communities would they support?

We are still in the discussion phase, that’s why we have only enabled Help and support and this category, as soon as we get to some agreements, people will be able to follow a process to request a category here. I suspect that Tagging might be one of them

I think this is the right place for my comments. I come from participating a lot in the OSM US Slack, where there are a lot of topical channels.

I think tagging is good, but only if people remember to use the tags or if other people can tag the topic (I’m not sure if this feature is restricted only to moderators or not / how such privileges would be granted.)

So yes it would be really nice to see some of the more frequently discussed topics receive their own dedicated Category in Discourse. For example, GeneralBicycles, or some other scheme, which makes it easier to subscribe to all topics related to a particular subject area one might be interested in.

I think it might be convenient to set the maximum nesting to 3, See meta.discourse.org.
Then you can have
Local chapter / The Netherlands / BAG import requests
This is currently a megathread on the old forum
Larger countries could use the second level for it’s states:
Local chapter / Germany / Nordrhein-Westphalia
And if necessary this becomes a second-level category with subthreads
Local chapter / Germany - Nordrhein-Westphalia / ...
Local chapter / USA - California / ...

Note: devs advice against more than two levels. I have never tried it, but it could be more buggy than the default two-levels. That is also why the option is hidden.

That’s a very interesting option that opens up additional possibilities for structuring our category hierarchy, thank you for sharing this discovery!

I think this would even address the concern expressed by @cquest that very active local communities or chapters would not fit in a global forum – at least based on nesting depth.

We seem to agreeing without coming to a consensus. So i figured i would collect eveyones ideas on categories into a basic set of categories.

This not an attempt to create an exhaustive list of topics.Hopefully it will move the discussion as everyone will have the same frame of reference.

Categories;
Tools - JOSM, ID, MR, RoR. Overpass
Libraries - osmose, etc
Chapters - Country / Region
Projects - OHM, HOT, TeachOSM
Tagging - general, rails, cycling, public transport, sidewalks

FYI, now that the process to request new categories has been implemented, you can easily do so from #site-feedback:new-category-requests or just start creating topics under the #general category and use tags in the meantime

Note that we need subforum for multiple threads, not just a single thread at OpenStreetMap Poland

@Mateusz_Konieczny the Polish community can request a separate category from #site-feedback:new-category-requests

A post was split to a new topic: Nesting levels for a Dutch category
