What fence_type is this?

Hello, I recently came across this fence on a hike in Ireland. I couldn’t find an appropriately fitting fence_type on the wiki or on taginfo. (except maybe post_and_wire with 1 use…) But this seems like it should be a fairly common fence so I wonder if I just missed or misunderstood something.

Does anyone have any further ideas?

Also I am new to OSM so please let me know if I’ve done something wrong. :)

Hello & welcome! :waving_hand:

fence_type=wire is probably the best choice: Key:fence_type - OpenStreetMap Wiki

No, you’ve asked a question when you’re uncertain about something! :+1:

Excellent behaviour, that we always wish more new-starters copied!

fence_type=paling sounds better for the first image.

Correct, and the lower sample pic to fence_type=wire in the wiki shows exactly this type of fence which is called “Viereckgeflecht” (square netting) in german.

Another welcome to @Brían and have fun mapping. Don’t hesitate to ask any question here in the forum.

Thank you guys for the help and the warm welcome! Now that I look at it again, it does actually in fact say on the wiki that fence_type=wire can also be with poles.

Also if I want to add the material of the fence can I tag material=metal(is this the right material for wires?) and pole:material=wood? (I see this tag on taginfo but not sure if it’s used with fences by anyone)

I think both fences are the same, the first image is just an older fence, maybe its hard to see on the picture.

A paling fence would have horizontal wooden rails or wire between post supporting many vertical strips (pales) of wood. The wood might be regular planed pieces nailed to the rails or lengths of split chestnut in twisted wires.

The image at the top of this thread just has posts and wires, none of the paling pieces. So type=wire.

Any other type would be beyond the pale.
