ele=* is currently documented as being in meters, without any option to use feet, though most major data consumers support feet. If you tag ele=1678' or ele=1678 ft, a mapper may come along to convert it to meters for consistency with the documentation, sometimes inaccurately. However, if you omit the unit, as many inexperienced mappers do, it’ll stick around longer, because it’s difficult to detect such anomalies amid mountainous terrain. I’ve proposed to formally allow feet to be tagged explicitly in regions where it makes sense to do so. We can continue the discussion there:
