Warning: do not update Basecamp! [Solved]

I dont think they are doing anything about it, maybe they dont really care because it does not affect their own maps.
Maybe they think more people will buy their maps instead of “corrupt” free OSM maps?
I really think it will harm their own business, people will ignore garmin devices more and more and will use smartphones.

They will now work on a webbased application called “Explore”

Unfortunatly for me it was too late. I successfully installed the older version now as recommended but face now two problems:

When I wanted to transfer a map to my GPS it refused to word because of a “wrong language DLL” on mapistall. I reinstalled an older version as recommended. The error remains and comes up as I start Mapinstall. What else can I do?
Found a workaround using the good old Mapsource but I’d prefer to keep using Basecamp.

Next problem I’m facing is when I wanted to recover my data from a recent backup file. It appears that in certain folders only data way before 2019 are reinstalled. I’m not sure though if something got missing when I did the backup or if the problem is related to the now installed Basecamp but I checked with an older backup with same results. Any ideas?

Better uninstall everything and install the latest Basecamp; Don’t work with those windows exe mapinstallers anymore but install the gmap versions. Those don’t have those issues with Mapinstall (see also this topic https://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=65669))

Me thinks this is all about one thing: stealing, taking, copying, pirating, spying on, your data. I’m not sure why they would want to do this (I can think of a dozen from plain greedy to conspiracy theories) but I’m sure that is the reason behind these @#%$&! web-based apps! Hate them!

It took me about an hour to find the link for the Mapinstall file. Garmin still hosts it online.

Find the temporary folder where the Basecamp update is stored. On Win7 it’ll be C:\Users[youraccountname]\AppData\Local\Temp\Garmin Software Updates

Delete everything inside Garmin Software Updates folder, then right-click on this folder, choose Properties, then **Security **and finally click Edit.

For all user groups in the list check Deny box in Full Control row below. Then Apply, Yes, OK, OK. That worked for me.

Bob, 4.8.4 is the Mac version, this issue concerns the maps that are installed under Windows (to be precise: only those maps that are registered in the windows registry with an installer or .exe file) . So AFAIK no problems on Mac OSX.
There are also no issues if you run the latest Basecamp/Mapinstaller with the gmap versions (the so called Mac version on garmin.openstreetmap.nl, but those can be used on Windows computers as well).

Hi ligfietser, thanks for the speedy reply. However a couple of years ago I downgraded to a 4.7 version of Basecamp in order to load some OSM maps onto my Garmin GPS. However last year I bought a new Mac and without thinking added the 4.8.4 version of Basecamp to it. Yesterday I found it impossible to transfer a downloaded OSM map of Italy (I’m off there on Thursday) from Basecamp to my Garmin Montana. So I assumed it was the old problem, but perhaps I was doing something else wrong then? Any tips?

You can always check with Javawa Device Manager if there is something wrong.

Other possible issue is a not compatible format of the micro SD card (must be <64Gb and formatted as Fat32). The Mac’s internal programm for formatting the Sd cards is also not compatible with Garmin devices.

You can also try to copy an already prepared img map directly to the device’s garmin folder with a file manager without the need of Basecamp.

It is also recommended not to use the Basecamp version from the Mac App store but download it directly from the Garmin site:

It seems, the MapInstall software version 4.2.1 (October 30, 2019) works correctly, so it is possible to update Basecamp to version 4.7.1.
