Wall gardens as ways?

We were discussing this article earlier: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-02-28/urban-nature-sydney-developers-incentives-rooftop-gardens-green/102030006 & I wondered if we even have a way of mapping wall gardens?

Turns out that yes we do (Of course! :-)): leisure=garden + garden:type=green_wall, used 22 times, but also another 38 “facade_garden”, which may be the same thing?

However Key:garden:type - OpenStreetMap Wiki says that it can’t be used for ways though?

It would probably make sense to change this so it can be used as a way as well?

Thoughts or concerns?

  1. It only documents that, according to people who edited it, use on ways was not expected

  2. it does not mean “can’t be used for ways”

  3. OSM Wiki is often missing documentation for many things

  4. It is fine to use tags in own way, see https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Any_tags_you_like

  5. Computer says no - Wikipedia should not be applied too strongly - validators, presets, QA tools, OSM Wiki can be wrong

It’s not really a garden you can walk through, so I would advise against leisure=garden in general here.
I suggest inventing a new tag (see ATYL on the Wiki) and not diversifying leisure=garden even more than the status quo.

This is the correct tagging and green_wall already implies that it is a way and not a node or area (well, it is an area of course but this would be micromapping on the “insane” level imho) so I would not hesitate to use it on a way.

for sure it is but “green wall” is an established term and I would go for it.

Changing my wording slightly …

The wiki currently says it should only be used on nodes & areas.

So does it have to be changed to include “ways”?

& after also discussing it on Tagging, somebody from there made the necessary changes
