I‘m a quite new mapper in the OSM community, who has already done some local edits for a greek island, because I am on vacation there very often (Karpathos).
Out of curiosity, I was looking at Google Street View, and I found a village on street view, which has full coverage. The town in mind here is Skala Fourkas (Σκάλα Φούρκας), Kassandra, Chalkidiki. I found a ton of street signs, which would be helpful for OSM, because all streets are unnamed in OSM in that said town, but I cannot use them, because Google Street View is not a allowed source for OSM edits. I am aware of that.
Now my question: Can, please, somebody verify these street names I want to add for me? I am not from Greece, so I cannot visit that village either.
Hi! In general posting this in the Greek section of the forum would have probably gotten more local eyes on this. Personally I don’t live near here myself, but maybe you could add a note for someone whol lives closer to perhaps have a look?
There is a single mapillary track in the village, from which I can barely make out Aristotelous street, which I will map myself.
Hey!
Thanks for the answer! I will post it there definetely, I did not know that there is an extra section for greece/greeks.
And, wdym by „taking notes“? Like write them down somewhere?
It’s a feature on the osm website! It’s used as a sort of comment box for the map itself, and generally local mappers will check out notes in their area. Something like “Please check street names in this village as they all have names” or something like that will do.
Okay, thanks for showing me! Really helps out.
Is it possible to just write the street name down in that note, that I found it on Street View, and somebody needs to verify it?
No, you would just simply write “Can someone tell me what is the name of this street?” (preferably in Greek I guess, but English should work as well).
Otherwise (if you enter Google name and ask for verification) the answer would be tainted by copyright and you still wouldn’t be able to use it in OSM.
