Vandalism and blocks in Israel

@SomeoneElse,
I have some ideas about such cases and I would be interested to join the discussion.

@Firefishy,
Perhaps now is a good time to launch that cache purge. Please note the extend of the vandalism:

No , there are still serious issues. It would be a waste of time to do it now.

One thing that would be useful to have would be the last editing users and changesets of each of the node revert fails in that complex error log - or even a random sample.

Edit: I’m now creating that list, for the 66k unique nodes that “failed to revert” (most of which I suspect “failed” because they had already been reverted).

Edit 2: about half way down that list…

@SomeoneElse,

There are currently 46 relations that were last modified by one of the vandals listed above.

What would be the best approach to restore them?

There are 66k unique nodes and 3k ways that we need to do first. I’m currently going through the 66k nodes and prioritising those for restore. It wouldn’t help to dive in and try and do these piecemeal, as it means I’d be chasing a moving target of “things I need to compare against”.

Edit: the first of those “node revert” changesets is here. There are still lots to do, and in each case my previous revert failed because of reverts attempted by well-meaning people who didn’t always make a very good job of the revert.

Edit: the eighth of those is here. You can see the level of complication by looking at this node, and you can see it took me multiple changesets to get it right.

Edit 12th (I think) node revert in progress

Feedback and comments on my revert bot proposal post are highly appreciated.

@zstadler Can you have a quick look at https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/143165243 and see if anything has been reverted to an “obvious wrong version”? Unfortunately you’ve used the same account for attempted “vandalism tidy-up” as “previous mapping”, which creates a challenge for the revert scripts.

Particular ones to look for are nodes that were edited by you and then vandalised for the first time by one of dawekiv148 vecago7283 febevi3666 kasiva6740 tewer84412 nodofi9184 tajoced719 gifokab209 or hefiko2692 .

Can anyone that gets a chance please look at https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/143204094 and see if there are any “nodes reverted to the wrong place” in there? There are still other errors, of course, but hopefully the nodes in that changeset should be correct.

Looking at node 10981477075 and some other random nodes, it looks like the node was reverted to its pre-vandalism version, despite the fact that version 4 was an incomplete revert on my behalf.

I could not find any such issues with this revert

I’m still doing a couple of “misplaced node” reverts, but what would be useful would be if people could point to any remaining “misplaced nodes” that they know of? You’ll need to look in the OSM data because what is rendered in cached map tiles won’t be up to date.

Right - I’ve done the “misplaced node” reverts that I’m aware of. If anyone (such as @zstadler ) sees any others, please report it here - it’s going to be easier for me to revert objects to pre vandalism versions than it is for people to do it manually. Also, given the number of intertwined vandal changesets please don’t try and use a web-based revert tool - it will only make things worse. An example of a “misplaced node” effect is this.

There may be some ways that have “lost” their tags. Again, please report it here as it’s going to be easier for me to revert objects to pre vandalism versions than to do it manually.

There will also be some missing ways, like here. We can probably restore those if necessary, but that’s a bit more difficult, but again please do report them here.

One more thing - vandalism is still going on (like here). Please email the DWG if you see any examples.

Now that all deleted/misplaced nodes are in place, isn’t it time to perform a similar automatic “revert to pre-vandalism” to all ways affected by the malicious accounts?

For info: https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/bojicat389 blocked in https://www.openstreetmap.org/user_blocks/15287 and being reverted in https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/143254680.

(ongoing) and

https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/cinid15546 https://www.openstreetmap.org/user_blocks/15288 reverted in https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/143256189 (complete).

The “current list of vandals that we know about” includes dawekiv148,vecago7283,febevi3666,kasiva6740,tewer84412,nodofi9184,tajoced719,gifokab209,hefiko2692 bojicat389 nomadod999,focipi8484,woyeh15025,bapil95563,joyboy8 cinid15546 and the earlier “palestine forever”

If anyone sees any vandalism by other users please report it by email to the DWG immediately: email data@openstreetmap.org with a subject line that includes the name of the (new) user and/or their userid.

Edit: added some more to list.
… and some more (thanks @Spiekerooger )

Those account names resemble the ones used for diary spam in the past.

There is also joyboy8, caught, blocked and reverted by woodpeck last night (note: with a different changeset desc). There were also some last weekend with different changeset descriptions.

And if two weeks ago is still deemed “current”, this one as well: palestine forever | OpenStreetMap

plus the newest one of yesterdays/todays vandalism, cinid15546 | OpenStreetMap

as well as the stupid “backfire” vandalism by oveosas123 | OpenStreetMap and hazshaz | OpenStreetMap

Perhaps we could have a list of vandal accounts which we believe have been successfully reverted?

This can help us understand if the current map distortions are still pending to be reverted, or by reverts that were assumed to be complete.

You can request reloads via @Adam_Franco’s OSM-dirty (adamfranco.github.io) tool.

the dirty mechanism used by that tool is outdated for quite some time…
