Upload has been blocked due to rate limiting - how to save the work that was done?

Dear all
My name is Arnaud, French man based close to Paris, 55 years old. Hello OSM ;)

I am new to the community (like days), and facing the “Upload has been blocked due to rate limiting. Please try again later.” message. I have found a few questions explaining that new members are limited to avoid mass trash, which I kinda understand.
I think this should probably be one of the first messages in the introduction training course so that all newcomers are fully aware.

>> Does anyone know the exact limit or is there a way to know my own limit please?

>> Does anyone know how the limit works please? Is it a limit on uploads number ? Is it a limit on number of features modified? Maybe a mix of both?

>> How long until I can add massive lots of features?

I am trying to get French golf courses cleaned up and completed as a part of a personal project. So I started to refine features, initially saving hole by hole until I got my first limit. So I changed my mind and started to upload more features by round, like 50 or 60 features, it worked well. I now have 100 features unsaved, I got the Upload has been blocked due to rate limiting. Please try again later message 2 days ago, so I just wait untill now and just retried to upload my features again, without success.

Is there a way to save my changes locally so I can upload subsets of my current update?

Thank you all for your help!

Hi you don’t say which editor you are using, but assuming it is iD the editor embedded in the OSM website: you can save your edits as an OSM change file (.osc), there’s a link at the bottom of the upload panel on the right hand side.

Unluckily that alone is not going to help much, as iD doesn’t (may have changed but unlikely), support re-loading changes from a .osc file. So either you need to use one of the editors that support that (JOSM, Vespucci) once the limit has been lifted, or ask somebody to do it for you.

The upload limit will go away once you made some more (and smaller) edits, but as is you’ve maneuvered yourself in to a bit of a catch 22 situation. Given there is no other way forward, I would suggest saving your edits as explained above, and then continue editing elsewhere (on other golf courses or whatever so you don’t create conflicts) for now, and we address the issue with the saved changes separately.

Thank you Simon!
Yes, using iD editor embedded in OSM website - sorry for not mentioning.
Will try as per your recommendation - and if I can’t make it happen, I will probably just redo my features and save with smaller sets

Very rarely, I get a message like this when I download a lot of overhead imagery.

The solution is normally to wait perhaps 10 minutes.

this is entirely different rate limiting

Somewhat. A lot of downloading can limit uploading.

may be true for some other cases but not relevant at all here

limit triggering “Upload has been blocked due to rate limiting. Please try again later." is not influenced at all by how much was downloaded
