I am looking at the islet at: https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/48800816. I have been a nearby local for nearly 40 years and when I noticed this feature being prominently named on every map of my local activities (even when zoomed way out) I knew it wasn’t correct and wondered if I could fix it. That is how I found out about OSM and attempted to fix the map. I changed an island tag to islet and I deleted the name tag after verifying with the local governing and historical organizations that there was not a name for this small patch of land in the Rum River. While it does not belong to any property owner, it appears there is one property that wants to claim it as their own, even using their address as the business location on Bing, which I don’t think is right to do. As there is not any official name or even a consensus on a nickname (3 different names have been used on other maps, 2 of which appear to be inside jokes), I believed the best course of action was to remove any names. The problem is that after doing so, the name remains on the map and my changes don’t seem to have had any real impact. Have I done something wrong?
It takes a while for the map to update after a change is made.
The name appears to be gone now?

Your problem could be explained by this:
It then also can depend on where exactly you see that name (which app or website). Every data consumer has different update frequencies
Edit: presumably I was just checking right at the 24 hour update timeline and per the exceptions section of the wiki: “Zoom levels 1–12 are only rerendered once a day[2], so clearing your browser cache will not help for those[3].” So this appears to be the answer. Thank you!
I am looking at the OSM website, checking both firefox and chrome. I have also checked on other devices in case of cache issue, but I still see the name. Also thank you for the welcome 
Not here, at any zoom level. Regardless, it takes time both for the map to update, which also varies with zoom levels and views on that particular spot, and for your browser cache (and potential ISP/employer cache) to update, like @silversurfer83 pointed out.
Oh that’s interesting. I’ll try checking on another device over a mobile network and see if I can see it. Thank you.

I checked on a different device with a new browser, mobile network, and in a private browsing tab just in case. I still see it at the nearest zoom.
Perhaps OSM has different map caches for users in different regions. I do believe it will be updated in a reasonable time.
There are different tile servers which spread the load across the world
There could be several reasons for this,
but not this one, the island isn’t even showing at zoom 12 anymore (the nearest/highest zoom is 19):

Tiles are also cached at the CDN (Content Delivery Network), not just the browser. You need to do a hard reload (e.g. Ctrl+F5) for every zoom level you still see old data.
