The airport has two tags. One is a node the other is an area. Is this correct or should I add the info from the node to the area and delete the node?

Generally speaking, one feature should be tagged only once: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/One_feature,_one_OSM_element
Yes, I would move the tags from the point (node) to the area and delete the node. Or, if you want to maintain the history, merge the separate node onto the area rather than delete it.
