Trans Canada Trail

Trying to add Yukon trails to the Trans Canada Trail network. Help with tagging and relations would be appreciated or is there a document somewhere with general guidelines that has been recently updated?

Welcome Jamie43!

It all depends on your starting point  It seems you already have some experience editing the Trans-Canada Trail (relation: superroute), unlike me.

Before we get into the details,

  • As you may have noticed, the wiki is obviously outdated. It would be a good place to start documenting any consensus built in this tread.
  • For those interested in mapping the Trans Canada Trail, please be aware that the data available on their website cannot be imported due to license incompatibility (Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 4.0 International Public License).

However, in your case, it might be easier to help you by providing more details about the problems you encounter.

Sweet, thanks for the reply.

First Big Question:

After looking at the existing TCT in other parts of Canada, it appears that the routes are organized like the following:

Local Route e.g.Elk Valley Trail containing ways → Superroute province wide e.g Relation: Trans Canada Trail (British Columbia) (10038690) → Super(duper  )route: e.g Relation: Trans Canada Trail (3060299). Or from the top down, the TCT superroute, then has a sub provincial superroute, then a local route containing ways. Is this the best practice? I began following this template but started having doubts as this isn’t common through out Canada.

I guess I’m looking for confirmation on this template before I get too deep into it.

All the trails are already in OSM, just need to be tagged as such using local knowledge. Honestly, I can’t believe this hasn’t been done yet.

Is the only TCT wiki:

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Canada#Trans_Canada_Trail

?

I am not sure there is a clear consensus about how to proceed. I found an old 2009 discussion on the Talk.ca mailing list, but the latest I found was held here: Talk:Canada Discussion page.

In other words, the discussion currently appears to be inactive, and I haven’t found any definitive documentation on the best way to build this (these) relation(s).

To move your project forward (not to discourage you), I suggest a three-step approach:

  • Build your thoughts. Examine what actually exists (as you are doing), consider previous discussions (Talk:Canada Discussion page), and determine what would be relevant to make it feasible and keep it alive, preferably across Canada.

  • Make a proposal. Document your thoughts and submit a proposal. This doesn’t mean it has to be long or complex. Allow a bit of time for comments and objections (if any). Address suggestions/objections to reach consensus on your (improved) proposal.

  • Update the wiki: Make the proposal public, update/clean up the wiki so that contributors wanting to work on Trans Canada Trail relations don’t have to repeat this work

This may not be the answer you were looking for, but you have the opportunity to make your way the “official” one
