My opinion - we do not need in OSM: equator, poles, polar circles, tropics and any other meridians, circles of latitude or points which coordinates are defined as constants and does not represent either landscape feature or any kind of administrative/political/e.t.c. border.
We do not need in OSM time zones in seas as well.

Reason: any kind of map task which may use geometry of such objects - may use coordinates from definition as well.

Наносить на карту координатную сетку - так это же чистая обязанность рендера. Причем такую, какую он пожелает - градусную, километровую, через каждые 10 градусов или через 10 секунд. И он имеет возможность сделать это самостоятельно, даже если и базы объектов никакой воще не будет.

I will repeat myself, but they can be used:

geocoding (why on earth would you remove place=locality objects)
more intuitive and flexible spatial querying based on objects and not hard-coded cords in the software
if these objects exist, they belong to OSM

And nobody denied one of them after 72 messages (including changeset discussion at osm.org)

BushmanK утверждал совсем не это, а то, что нормальная смотрелка способна (должна быть способна) нарисовать и меридианы и полюса(ы?) самостоятельно. Да еще по желанию пользователя включать/отключать их показ.

Объект Экватора - для расчётов расстояний до Экватора (как у двух объектов)
Полюса - как обычные названия местности. В чём их особенность что их сразу ~~вандалить~~из базы удалять хотят я так и не понял.
В конце-концов, они будут использоваться для чего их для связи с проектом Wikidata (что не первостепенно для OSM), но немаловажно: http://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/37590347

Простой пример про “100 метров” можно усложнить до реального использования: выбрать в пределах километров и получить деревья из Лукунского леса (если речь о Северном полюсе).
