TomTom MapRoulette challenges

My team at TomTom created a MapRoulette challenge you may find useful. It’s called Add Highways and it contains 421 cases in which highways may need to be added to the map. We identified these highways from the output of our tool RoadRunner, which automatically generates a road network based on GPS trace data. We verified about one third of the RoadRunner data for East Flanders and Antwerp against the available imagery sources and only created tasks for the highways we could detect on the imagery.

I hope you find this challenge useful to further extend the road network in Belgium. If you do, we’re happy to validate the remaining RoadRunner data for East Flanders and Antwerp or for other provinces.

Our editors may also work on some of the tasks in a couple of weeks, using the detailed instructions in the MapRoulette challenge.

Mijn team bij TomTom heeft een MapRoulette-challenge aangemaakt die jullie misschien nuttig zullen vinden. De challenge heet Add Highways en bevat 421 situaties waarin wegen zouden kunnen toegevoegd worden aan OSM. We hebben deze wegen geïdentificeerd in de output van onze tool RoadRunner, die automatisch een wegennetwerk genereert op basis van GPS-data. We hebben ongeveer een derde van de RoadRunner-data voor Oost-Vlaanderen en Antwerpen vergeleken met de beschikbare luchtbeelden en alleen voor de wegen die we daarop konden terugvinden MapRoulette-taken aangemaakt.

Hopelijk vinden jullie deze challenge nuttig om het wegennetwerk in België verder te helpen uitbreiden. Als er interesse is, kunnen we gerust de rest van de RoadRunner-data voor Oost-Vlaanderen en Antwerpen of voor andere provincies valideren.

Onze editors zullen over een paar weken eventueel ook aan een aantal taken werken, met behulp van de gedetailleerde instructies in de MapRoulette-challenge.

Mon équipe chez TomTom a créé un défi MapRoulette qui pourrait vous être utile. Il s’intitule Add Highways et contient 421 cas dans lesquels des routes pourraient être ajoutées à OSM. Nous avons identifié ces routes à partir des résultats de notre outil RoadRunner, qui génère un réseau routier basé sur des données de traçage GPS. Nous avons vérifié environ un tiers des données de RoadRunner pour la Flandre-Orientale et Anvers par rapport aux sources d’imagerie disponibles et n’avons créé des tâches que pour les routes que nous pouvions détecter sur l’imagerie.

J’espère que vous trouverez ce défi utile pour aider à étendre le réseau routier en Belgique. Si c’est le cas, nous serons heureux de valider les données restantes de RoadRunner pour la Flandre-Orientale et Anvers ou pour d’autres provinces.

We talked about integrating this into the existing Road Completion project, but the challenge is a little too different. The original results include way too many false positivies. A manual review of which segments are probably worth mapping has been done by TomTom. For Road Completion we use government data, where that review should be less needed, and can thus be done within MapRoulette itself.

I’ve tried a few tasks here myself. All of them so far were service roads, but usually worth mapping because they go pretty far from existing roads. For delivery and visitors these would be quite useful.

@joost_schouppe thanks for explaining why we didn’t integrate this into the Road Completion project, I agree it’s good to share this background information. And thanks for trying out some of the tasks!

I have the same experience as Joost: mostly service roads in this challenge. I think it’s cool that TomTom uses its GPS traces for tasks like this!

Is it normal that the screen is flashing ?

Currently I’m not experiencing any issues in MapRoulette. Do you still have this problem? Which browser are you using?

Hi everyone,

I’m including a Dutch and French version of this message below.

In our TomTom data, we have identified some water features which are not yet in OSM. It can be useful to add these to the map for improved visualization, so we created a MapRoulette challenge for this purpose: Add Water Features. I’m sharing it in the same thread as before to avoid spamming the forum.

The challenge contains 57 cases in which a missing water feature may need to be added. We identified these missing features by spatially comparing OSM to our own data. We only created tasks for the water features we were able to identify on the available imagery sources.

Feel free to try out the challenge and hit me up if you have any questions or comments. Our team may also make some edits in a couple of weeks.

In onze TomTom-data hebben we een aantal waterfeatures gedetecteerd die nog niet in OSM zitten. Voor een betere visualisatie kan het nuttig zijn om deze toe te voegen, dus hebben we een MapRoulette-challenge aangemaakt om hierbij te helpen: Add Water Features. Ik deel hem in dezelfde topic als de vorige challenge om het overzichtelijk te houden.

De challenge bevat 57 situaties waarin een waterfeature toegevoegd zou kunnen worden. We identificeerden deze ontbrekende features door OSM te vergelijken met onze eigen data. We hebben alleen taken aangemaakt voor de waterfeatures die te zien zijn op het beschikbare beeldmateriaal.

Probeer de challenge gerust uit en geef me een seintje als er vragen of opmerkingen zijn. Onze editors zullen mogelijks ook een aantal taken oplossen over een paar weken.

Nous avons identifié dans nos données quelques éléments aquatiques pas encore présents dans OSM. Il pourrait être utile de les ajouter sur la carte pour améliorer la visualisation. Dans ce but, nous avons créé un nouveau défi MapRoulette: Add Water Features. Je le partage dans le même sujet qu’avant pour éviter de spammer le forum.

Le défi contient 57 cas dans lesquels un élément aquatique pourrait être ajouté. Nous avons pu identifier ces cas en comparant les données d’OSM avec nos propres données et en validant manuellement par la suite les résultats avec les sources d’images disponibles. Nous avons uniquement créé des tâches pour les éléments aquatiques visibles dans les images.

N’hésitez pas à essayer le défi et à me contacter si vous avez des questions ou des commentaires. Notre équipe pourra aussi faire quelques éditions dans quelques semaines.
