Here is what I mean,

The path it took me to find it

And then I had the whole

signup → login → no I want to signup→ fill out the information → password too short → username already taken → go to your email → click the link → login again → what’s your display name are you sure → welcome page with no links to the forum → go back to front page → communities → go around the wikiagain → find the link → try to login → actually you have to signup again but it’s ok it’s just one click

This is what I mean

Here is “the path” I hope you can see it on your phone

Hi shodanx, welcome to our wonderful forum you finally found after a odyssey through the whole OSM environment!

I cannot offer a solution to this problem but you managed to contribute a potential candidate for our topic “Lustige Sachen” (OSM related funny things) with your very first post here

which is an unbeatable record and never happened before. Congratulations.

I hope your complain will be heard and an easier access for newcomers can be created. Thanks for your post.

The intended way to get here from osm.org is to click “Help” and then “Community Forum”.

Maybe there should be a link under “Communities” as well - although that term usually refers to local chapters in the realm of OSM.

It should just be directly placed here so you can access it in one click, without having to look for it or Google it.

When you join OSMF you get a voucher for a wider monitor to accommodate all the links in the osm.org navbar that someone has insisted are really important.

Regrettably, the widescreen monitor program is paused until the navigation bar can fund itself.

Do we have an open issue about reconsidering what is in the bar? The OWG can get some data on what’s used from matomo

I opened one, at the risk of royally annoying the maintainers, so please drop some data points from Matomo in there to make it worth their attention:

check. i’m brand new in the OSM scene but have been very active for the last week basically, intensively explored the wiki, watched yotube videos, followed mastodon accounts, checked for mailing lists, bookmarked a ton of resource websites, downloaded vespucci app, etc; but only found this forum yesterday lol.
i don’t know exactly how i got here. the website was down for me so i went around and around in various “help” pages outside of the website proper until i stumbled onto this.

Hallo @shodanx,
you are soooooo right. I just described my reasons why I did not find here in:

Link with %253D instead of %3D (=)

It’s a different way of a different :older_person: (actually with a gray beard :man_beard:)

OT

PS. What is the difference between :man_beard: and :person_beard: ?
The coulor is wrong in both  of them.

Finding the forum is only the first step.

Once you get here you then find that about 63% of the people you need to speak to aren’t here, but are instead blethering away in secret on Telegram, or chatting on a mailing list, or that a fervent argument is happening in slow motion on change-set comments.

Similar to you, I asked in 2024 What would it take for this forum to be listed at https://www.openstreetmap.org/communities? and received a reply that

New and existing editors are already pointed to the forum after editing.

The over use of the ‘community’ label is a bit annoying but the page you are referring to has a different purpose than to direct people here.

That is a pretty common route, as web sites go.

That’s how I found the forum. That said I DO NOT associate a forum for talking about mapping with HELP. Help is FAQs and maybe annoying videos if a website believes everyone wants to watch a video. Also help should have an email / contact form.

Better start associating, because forums are often “hidden” under help or support.

As Peter said.

Have you ever tried to look for help with your ISP? Those are billion Dollar companies that run forums in their help section to get their customers to do the support work for them.

What I try to say: A forum is a standard help tool for little projects, for larger volunteer run projects like us, and also for billion dollar companies (to keep the bottom line from becoming too thin
)

That’s a fair point, but if we called it “INCESSANT ARGUMENTS ABOUT TAGGING” then no one would click through to it. At least with “HELP” we can lure people here under false pretences.

“HELP” (!!!) is exactly my reaction to most tagging discussions, so that would seem to work well (:-) :-) :-)).

The ISP where my blog / email is hosted uses “Resources” as their help page. It isn’t a forum. The ISP where I connect to the internet uses “support” as their help page. It also isn’t a forum. So what’s your point exactly?
