The end of my GSoC journey with Valhalla: Pedestrian area routing

Hi everyone!

I’ve just published my final report for this year’s Google Summer of Code (GSoC), where I worked on Valhalla adding support for routing through pedestrian areas.

The feature is now merged and running on the full-planet build, and you can already try it on openstreetmap.org, see an example.

This final report covers how it works, the design decisions and challenges along the way, the current limitations and what could come next.

You can read it here  !

This has been a whole summer of work, with plenty of headaches and thinking, but definitely worth it. Don’t miss it!

Impressive! :exploding_head:

Will a future version route around buildings too?

Thanks! Actually, I think you might have just spotted a bug :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:. It does route around buildings (holes inside the area are handled), so it looks like this particular square might be mapped in a way that’s causing trouble. We’ll take a look into it, thanks a lot for pointing it out!

Maybe the touching inners cause a problem?
