This is a flat space (i.e. without any stage or seating), usually indoors and possibly with air-conditioning, used for theatre and dance practice. It is usually owned by a theatre/dance company or teaching institute, and may either be exclusively used by said company/institute, or may be rented out for use by other theatre/dance companies.
Existing tags I’ve considered are
club=theatre - can work if it’s exclusively used by a single theatre/dance group. But it does not work for a space rented out to multiple, changing groups.
amenity=theatre - while rehearsal spaces are sometimes used for performances, they lack amenities (like a stage, seating, wings, crossovers, and lighting) which make auditoriums suitable for performance. That also makes them more affordable for most theatre groups.
Isn’t this the same as leisure=dance (+ dance:teaching=yes ) ?
Rehearsal should be an attribute, not a feature. As you said, it could be used for teaching, or even shows, not only rehearsing themselves. It should be eg =performance_studio / =performing_arts_studio + *=rehearsal , unfortunately suffering from the vague amenity=studio being defined for broadcasting multimedia specifically. If this is deemed unnecessary, it could be proposed for an expansion, but then there’s problem with visual art studios.
I know it’s bad, but I’m more focused on making it look less restrictive. It’s not for rehearsing only. I thought it should use leisure= , to follow =dancing , and allow it to be combined with amenity=studio for combined or dual-purpose ones that can do recording (especially for music).
They can be distinguished by access==yes vs =private
