I’m seeing quite a few free-standing washing machines (Wash.me) appearing in garages / service stations. I’ve been tagging these as amenity=washing_machine (consistent with Wiki suggestions) but have also seen shop=laundry + self_service=yes.
On the one hand, it doesn’t seem correct to tag a free-standing machine as a shop, on the other hand, they are arguably closer to a laundromat than a general washing machine, e.g. on a campsite (which is typically not available for public use). shop=laundry does make it clearer, e.g. to a renderer, that it is public facility.

iD preset labels this “Self-serve laundry”.
I can see your point about a “shop” - you’d expect to have opening hours, etc. So I slightly prefer “amenity”, but could live with either. (And unless you can persuade the iD maintainers to vary their preset, their tagging may win out anyway, on past experience)
This is a combined list of the typical tags for a brand that was taken over by them. I suspect they have been rebranded, but I don’t know. Both are mapped under multiple different versions of their names, suggesting a branding problem. ¯(ツ)/¯ It is just possible that they have a small number of outlets in conventional retail units
I think amenity=vending_machine is important and shop=laundry might bit slightly misleading. self_service=yes should probably be self_service=only. I wonder if capacity=* is the right tag, but devices=3 doesn’t sound better. :D
Apart from not being indoors in a shop unit, I don’t think there’s really any difference between these free-standing units and a typical unattended laundrette shop. So they should really be tagged with the same primary tags. shop=laundy is well-established for this. However, there’s also amenity=washing_machine.
Actually, capacity=* needs further development. There are 2 factors affecting capacity - number of machines and how many kg each machine can take, which can vary between machines on one site.
