On the page Banner Building Codes | Office of the Registrar | Illinois , you can see the building codes that have been assigned in BANNER (the enterprise resource planning software used by UIUC) for the buildings in UIUC. Ignore the leading “1”; the leading 1 is never used in any texts, calendar invitations, etc written by humans.
For some buildings, the BANNER building code is the common short name for the building; for example, “ECEB” is the common short name for the Electrical & Computer Engineering building. For some buildings, the BANNER building code is not very commonly used, but it may be printed in calendar invitations, schedules, etc, and it appears on the screens that people with access to the university intranet can project to over intranet. For example, “GELIB” is the building code for the Grainger Library (officially the Grainger Engineering Library Information Center), and “AH” is the building code for Altgeld Hall.
For some buildings, an old building code also exists prior to the renaming of the building. For example, the Mechanical Engineering Building was expanded and renovated, with the resulting building being called the Sidney Lu Mechanical Engineering Building. Its former building code was “MEB”, and it is still commonly called “MEB”. Its current building code is “LUMEB”, which is also in common use (both “MEB” and “LUMEB” are also used in speech, not only in writing). It is also abbreviated as “LuMEB” and as “Sidney Lu MEB”.

Currently, only some buildings have their building codes tagged; they are sometimes listed as short_name or ref. In some cases, some buildings have short_name which is not a building code, but instead a name that is shorter than the long name but is still more than 10 characters long.
Other than MEB, I do not know of any unofficial building abbreviations which are different from the BANNER building codes.
