Is there a tag for equipment for making firewood (for campfires/fireplaces), which is sometimes provided at public campsites and lean-tos?
Cool! I like the manually operated wood splitter, have not seen one of those before.
I don’t think there is a special tagging for such, but there is wood_provided=yes/no for firepit places, so one could add tools_provided=yes + tools=handsaw;wood_splitter.
As you mentioned wood_provided= , a more critical task is to decide between the synonyms first
Seems there was a mass addition of wood_provided= jumpstarting its growth later osm tag history
The attribute should clarify whether timber to be cut, or already split ready-to-use firewood pieces are supplied. Then the tools can be added.
For the feature, it’s interesting to find the storage hasn’t been standardized in the first place. As simple as building=shed only, to even hacks eg shop=fuel + fee=no I assume. Curiously no =vending_machine + vending=fuel + fuel=wood / fuel:firewood=yes (+ fee=no ) , unlike =excrement_bags perhaps. Considering the most numerous one, the need for its own amenity= should be discussed. Otherwise there will be a firewood-making feature before the retrieval or storage feature.

Another inconsistency to be aware of is fuel=wood vs fuel:firewood=
A fundamental question to ask is whether this needs to be firewood-themed, or generic sawing and cutting, for both the feature and attribute. The latter can simply be attributed, or double feature as intended for firewood. There should be some tags and discussion about saws somewhere I forgot. Be aware the 1 amenity=axe is axe-throwing.
There is no shop nor a vending machine in this place. It is just some kind of a campground with a firepit and wood is provided in a small shed. That does not require any other tag than just wood_provided=yes (which is a documented tag) and probably fee=no to make that extra clear.
If the mapper wants to deliver 100% details they could add wood:ready_to_use=yes but this is already quite sophisticated. I would not go that far as it is a matter of personal assessment, if the wood is really ready to use or not. Even wood_provided=yes may fail when some visitors were there before you and burned the whole lot. One has always has to be aware that in such places one or the other surprise may be expected.
amenity=firewood and storage=firewood are undocumented ATYL tags and don’t make much sense in such a place imo.
