Currently aero clubs seems to be using club=aeronautical and club=aviation, with about 50 and 150 uses respectively.
I made a wiki page for club=aviation since it was the biggest, but I’m starting to regret my decision.
club=aviation seems like a very broad concept that could include for example and aviation geek club, if they do exist, when the goal was specifically flying clubs.
club=aeronautics seems better suited since by definition it relates to the flying and building of aircraft. Although even then you could say that could include an amateur aircraft manufacturing club, if they do exist, when it’s meant to represent aero clubs.
Could a club=flying tag for example be better? What does everyone think?
I agree that clubs gathering “aviation enthusiasts” and “actual pilots” are two very distinct things.
With the tag emerging organically, I guess that nobody thought of possible ambiguity, and just slapped the first value that came to mind. That makes the tags “skunked” and requiring manual cleanup. Luckily, ~200 uses overall is relatively easy to resolve.
Before the cleanup, we need to decide the best values for the two types, preferably such that the distinction is (fairly) obvious. aviation vs. flying looks fairly good, but perhaps someone can propose a better idea.
Do we have another field where we need to distinguish between “Foo fans” and “Foo practitioners”? Motorsports spring to mind…
