such events entirely depend on someone running them, and it takes a lot of effort - see previous ones
better said would be a lot of someones (just ask people who have setup Antwerp or Łódź events!)

I would go to SOTM EU unless I have preexisting event at such time or there is some catastrophic problem

But seriously though, even though hosting a conference is generally great, it needs a lot of work from many people for a long time to pull this off in a stable manner. And if the locally organised community isn’t big enough or willing to deal with all that, then I guess it’s no, for now. Maybe in the future things are different.

That is definitely an interesting idea. Unfortunately it does require a lot of effort and usually from a whole team, not just a single person.
I did look at SOTM EU 2024. I don’t think that we have enough volunteers for most of these roles. Even if we did, the technical requirements are also quite high.
We already host a local event, FOSS4G:BG, which has a much smaller scope (under 70 participants) and fewer technical demands - yet organising even that takes a significant toll on the team. Jumping from that straight to a full international SotM would be an extremely steep climb, and we likely wouldn’t be able to deliver the quality it requires. At least not currently.

Speaking as a board of Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team, and also I have connections with other OSM Communities. We can think of organizing it. Maybe we can involve someone from Gate Institute in Sofia and the municipality itself. If not 2027, maybe 2028. It could be only State of the Map EU, not the global one.
