Hi, I have question about speed cameras. I am using comaps, and when driving in navigation mode the user is correctly warned that there is a speed camera and what the speed limit is.
However, when I inspect the map in comaps (not in navigation mode) or inspect openstreetmap.org, there is no speed camera located on the map!
Does anyone know why this is the case? It’s possible that comaps is getting speed camera data from another source (but they don’t mention where on the their website). Or perhaps open street map isn’t allowed to show this information in my country (France).
You’re better off asking CoMaps themselves. They can answer the technical details
CoMaps consumes a lot of tags that aren’t shown because they are only really useful in certain cases. This includes for example maxspeed-data, which can’t be viewed by tapping roads, only when navigating. I reckon it’s the same with speed cameras.
Every provider of a map or app based on Openstreetmap individually decides what to show and what not.
Seems that the “Carto” style used on openstreetmap.org decided not to show them.
Maybe also because “speed camera warning” is for forbidden in some countries.
OpenStreetMap is a database. Because something doesn’t show up on Carto (the default base map on openstreetmap.org) it doesn’t mean it’s not mapped. Not everything will show up there and speed cameras are one of those.
Other providers can choose what they want to show, so you need to find a provider that supports speed cameras.
It turns out that they do show up in “edit” mode on openstreetmap.org. I don’t know why these wouldn’t be shown on the standard map, but at least I know how to find them now…
