Hi,
I noticed lots of missing addresses in India. Is there a government database that could serve as a basis for importing? (I’m not in India, so I can’t do StreetComplete or similar.)
As a confused foreign mapper who regularly has stupid questions - I’m sorry, they don’t really seem to do addresses everywhere. Best we can do is village names. Street names are only for big important streets too, apparently.
How does the post arrive? The postman knows everyone, or rather the leading family member. What happens when people move? I’m told they just.. don’t. At least in the case of the villages.
Can anyone tell us more about this?
I’m aware that very rural areas might not have an address, but like within cities I’m seeing a lack of addresses, which is why I asked.
you can just write
Village name, near landmark, reciever’s name
The person looking for the address will arrive at the village, ask locals where the landmark is (landmark may be a prominent person’s house, an important tree or anything really). Go to the landmark and ask people there where the person going by name X resides and they should be able to tell you the location.
Landmark is a useful tool of addressing even within cities
Can anyone to import village names from the source which license allowed to import to OSM, which India have over 600,000 villages and current name tagged is below half, mean another half is missing
It’s even worse, many are not even tagged as villages, some are at least marked with residential area but many are not on the map at all.
