Source tag ignored for a long time

Hey, so I got addicted immediatelly to updating outdated data in my area and discovered that I could change the background map for fixing/adding many features. But I had no idea I should also select it in the Source field when saving the edits. I completely ignored it and saved already like 130 change sets when I used one of the available background maps. Should I do something about it or just let it be and start selecting the source from now on?

On the other hand, I can see that completed change sets have “[imagery_used]” set automatically.

I wouldn’t worry about it, but if you really want to you can comment on your own changesets to say “source was X + Y + Z”.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

If many sources (I’m talking about iD) are mentioned automatically because I looked at them when mapping, then that’s a sign of thoroughness, isn’t it? I like to use all available on-board sources, then I can also be sure that I have entered everything to the best of my knowledge and belief. This also saves unnecessary time for the documentation work and I only add information if it is based on reports in the newspaper or on the Internet.

Hi @chicocheco, another welcome to OSM and our forum here. It is good to read you immediately got addicted to update data, same with me … .

As you have seen yourself the editor saves the information about the imagery used without action from your side. Also the information if a GPX track had been loaded up for the changeset is saved with the changeset.

The only information which is not saved automatically is “survey” and “local knowledge” which you have to enter yourself if you want it to be recorded (this applies at least if you use the standard editor called iD). As specially “survey” is a valuable information I recommend to enter this manually. But as SomeoneElse has already said

That is comforting to know it’s not a big deal and I’ll keep in mind to note the source when it’s something that is not available out of box :).

Also, I just wanted to add that I tend to forget about time when I start editing and that’s worrying :D. I see so many things that can be done and there is an immediate sense of satisfaction. If only Organic Maps, the app I have just recently switched to from GM, used more up-to-date maps.

I will use this forum to look up things when doubting.

I’m an expat living in Spain contributing make me more aware of space around me. I had no idea it’s so simple to be a part of the project.

OM usually updates roughly once a month.

If you desire quicker feedback you could gave a look at osmand (best pulled from F-droid app store) which offers hourly updates to active contributors
