Dear all,
I follow the initiative of @StC to propose a self-organised session at SOTM in Paris dedicated to infrastructure and utilities mapping.
Several topics are currently discussed and we could take advantage to be together, at least part of this community, to meet in person.
It is mostly intended to organise, share our views and ease coming remote discussions.
This post will be in wiki mode to gather everyone’s wishes on the matter in the list below (place a thump up/down following each item)
Here are some ideas I have in mind:
- Current proposals under discussion, depending on attendants (among which service supplies, railway markers, …)
- Several works in progress on editors iD/JOSM/… (presets, wrong connections between power and something else…)
- Further steps to reach in coming months/years and good will to achieve them
- Update on MapYourGrid initiative
If this proposal gets support and this session takes place, important notes will be shared here for anyone interested but couldn’t attend.
In practice, time slots will be booked directly in Paris at registration on Friday morning. I’ll do my best to chose the most suitable moment for this. Take a look to the whiteboard there. Ideally it would be on Saturday morning.
However focused on quality assurance software, our talk on Saturday afternoon connects to this matter.

We should preserve data from ground to map visible infrastructure, particularly for underground features.
Markers or contributors own magnetometers can be useful to validate and verify underground power line mapping, when possible

Keeping track of disappeared infrastructure: use OpenHistoricalMap. See replay for a presentation of OHM process to extract useful knowledge from OSM history. We struggle to distinguish removals from OSM between actual errors that shouldn’t be preserved and actual demolishing.
PV detection (see sotm2026 poster submission from Gabriel for details)
It raises privacy questions since it documents domestic installations seen from public space.
It is useful and improve national or regional inventories whereas operators struggle to get the right

Operators can go full blackbox or remain open and connect with local communities like OpenStreetMap to refine their inventories sustainably.
Proposed actions
Work on tagging
Use proposal only to change existing tagging if necessary. New tags can be experienced first, rendered on OpeninfraMap and then voted if for a broader review if needed.
A list of topics/fields for which develop tagging
- Railway power systems, as discussed on Infrastructure Matrix channel, a few months ago
- Qualify properly sewage substance
- Design:voltage and voltage
- Define simpler tagging to tag functions of water treatment plants, see incomplete proposals Waterworks and Water capture (draft to be done out of discussion in French)
