It means that if there are 10 points (or objects) wihout name on the map, they are now displayed 10 times with the label “Layer 1”.
Normaly, when a point (or object) has no name, the map just displays the name without any label.

Which map or tool are you working with? Can you share a screenshot or a link that shows the problem?

Hi @seevisit2 and welcome here.
I do think, that you’re using umap and I can reproduce this:
See it online Unbenannte Karte - uMap by clicking on the marker without name in the popup.
If you don’t like that, a workaround could be using a non-breaking space as name, see the marker right:
Here is the an exemple. bug-point-without-name - uMap
Thank you, but I have not found the special code of non-break space that you use, so it doesn’t work with my page (exemple : bug-point-without-name - uMap). But even if it works, It means for me to control and change 6000 maps that we have. Why do you consider (as frrom december 18th 2024) that a point without name should display the name of the layer ?! It is very stange. And I just happen to see that it puts also the name of the layer on the lines (as you can also see in the exemple).
I think it is just a bug that needs to be corrected. Otherwise, it makes umap very insecure for the main users that must change all their maps.
We have 6000 pages with Umap (www.seevisit.fr) and this update means that we need to change 6000 pages, which makes Umap a system not really reliable in the long term. Many users will sudenly have maps sowing the names of the layers on their old pages, making these pages very strange.
And this update, just to help new user to understand the difference between an object (point, line…) and a layer is strange. To be honest, I don’t think it will help anyone to see the name of the layer as the name of the object.
Please, could you review your position ? And in exchange, because we are a big user of Umap, I can tell you each time that I detect a bug (or a mistake on a map) and it will help you to improve the tool and the maps.
I’m not sure if anyone involved in umap participates regularly on this forum.
I know from experience that the maintainers do respond to issues raised in the Github repository:
It’s not clear to me if this is an intentional change or not.
I think it is a bug because it is not very logical. Could you please tell me where I can write to inform them ot the problem.
Thanks, I have created an account on Github and written a message.
The project home page is here:
https://umap-project.org/
There is an email near the end of that page (the Contact Us button).
There is also a forum (mostly in French), and Github as I mentioned previously.
I think the use of the name of the layer as name of the popup - if the popup itself hasn’t got a name - is a bug.
If you only have markers without name you could edit the popup content template of the layers. You find that in the Layer properties
in the “interaction options”
Remove the first line with the content
# {name}
This workaround won’t help you if you have popups with a name too.
Thanks. For my new pages, I assign a “never” to the property “display a label” on the objects for which you do not need a label.
But the scandal is that Umap (if they read my messages) do not consider the impact of this new strange rule (display the name of the label if the object has no name! ) for the 1,2 million pages that were created before.
Umap, please, if you read me, just apply this new rule for the pages created after you changed the rule.
Thanks
I have posted a message here, but I have no answer so far.
I don’t really know how Umap is organised. 1 year ago, I sent a message to tell them that the geo-localization didn’t work as good as in the past (I also think there is a bug in their code) but none answered, even if I m probably one of the bigest user of it because I manage 6000 different maps
You posted on the Github of “Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP)”. I have no idea what that means, but it is definitely nothing to do with the Umap project where you host your maps.
I linked to the relevant Github project above.
Thank your very much.
Where can I write to tell Umap? I need to tell them that since their new changes (December 18th 2024), I have detected 3 new bugs (among them a big one), in addition to 2 other bugs I’ve seen since a long time.
Thanks
Maybe you missed it, Alan linked to their page earlier in this thread.

Scroll down towards the bottom of the page where you find a button “contact us” (or contactez nous if you prefer french), there you will be able to contact them by mail.
But remember: It is Christmas-time and people might feel like doing other things these days than answering mails.
