Simplify overcomplex ways (does not work with JOSM)

I stumbled across some polygons with way too many nodes, for example, this grassland with 724 nodes:

Or this meadow with 565 nodes:

Is there any way to automatically simplify these ways by removing unnecessary nodes? JOSM’s “simplify” tool sounds like it should do exactly that, but doesn’t. It removes only points far from each other.

IIRC JOSMs simplify is configurable. But why would you want to change the way, if you are not modifying its geometry for other reasons in the 1st place? Yes it is overnoded, but not at a level that would cause actual issues.

Well, 700 nodes for a geometry where 50 would be enough is still too much. But of course, sometimes I want to fix something, and then it’s harder to modify hundreds of nodes.

As said it is overnoded, and -if- you were actually fixing something about it, simplifying it first would be completely in order.

Hi, it seems that the simplify-way tool can not simplify ways/areas which are connected/glued to other ways/areas.
Indeed that area is wasting a lot of nodes…

It is not really about the number of nodes. Though too big a number of nodes can make changes a chore and seal an outdated mapping, because people shy from touching it.

yes, particularly when several polygons are attached on to the other, as for example the Germans love. IMHO rather use a multipolygon if it’s more than a handful of nodes, or you’ll create a maintenance nightmare as easily as holding the “f” for some time.
