To summarize, my stance is that mappers in the U.S. shouldn’t copy the name from a roadway onto the name=* of the parallel sidewalk ways, like post number 2 said, because name=* should be reserved for when it’s specifically the sidewalk’s name. I recognize that there’s a demand for knowing the name of the parallel street for navigation. street:name=* is a reasonable solution, but a lot of work, and there are many ambiguous cases. Ideally, routers could backfill names more intelligently, including in the ambiguous cases. But there’s a lot more to do besides naming sidewalks anyways.
