Should a room=* node have an indoor=room tag?

I want to try add indoor features to my University. For a lot of rooms, I might not be able to tell what its exact shape is on a first pass, but I can see where the entrances are and map a POI node from that.

I feel I should use Key:room to tag room=classroom or room=lecture_hall, which the wiki does show as being allowed on nodes. However, the same page also says it requires an indoor=room tag, but the wiki page for that says it’s only allowed on areas.

(This is my first post on here so sorry if it’s not worded right)

The Wiki isn’t entirely clear on this, but I would tag as indoor=room, room=classroom (indoor is a top-level tag; room to my knowledge is not).

Worldwide, over 100,000 features (nodes and area) use indoor=room, room=*; only about 4,000 use room=* by itself.

For just nodes, both approaches appear to be applied equally: about 2,000 nodes each use room=* with or without indoor=room.

So I’d still go with indoor=room even on nodes; the Wiki page needs to be updated to show allowed usage for both areas and nodes.

Less than 2% of uses of indoor=room are on nodes and some use cases of indoor data won’t work as well, or at all, with nodes. So while it may be acceptable as a better-than-nothing placeholder, it shouldn’t be considered as an equivalent option to areas which are clearly preferred.

right, it is not equivalent, but it can make sense, e.g. if you want to map a name, ref, approximate location, etc., but you will miss a lot of detail simply by omitting the shape.
