To me, adding separate sidewalks represents more detail, so they shouldn’t be removed if someone has taken the time to add them properly. But the key is “properly” here. Given the problems doing it badly can cause, it is important that any addition of separate sidewalks is done well. Rather than getting bogged down in the issues about which approach is better, or when it’s better to use each one, I would concentrate on some guidelines that let mappers who want to do separate sidewalk mapping know how to do it well, in order to minimise problems for data users.
