Secondary school sports centre ("stadium") names

I find that many secondary schools give names to their “stadiums” that are separate from the name of the field that is in the “stadium”, and it feels fitting to add those names to the map, but I wonder how this might be done, or if it should be done at all?

For reference I am located in Michigan, US, and from local experience of Hillsdale, MI, I know this American football field and track, along with amenities like bleachers, concession stand, box office, etc., together make up what is known as “Baumgarten Stadium”. Given the size and multi-use purposes, it would probably be fitting to label it as a sports centre. In any case, that name would not be fitting for the field or track alone.

As another example, in Muskegon, MI, this American football field, along with bleachers, concession stand, box office, etc., makes up what is known as “Monsignor Kehren Stadium”. Although a (former) track is present, it is only used for American football, so as far as I can tell, it is probably best tagged as a recreation ground? Again, the name would only be fitting for the whole area, not just the field.

Three reasons I hesitate:

  1. On one hand, these are pretty minor “stadiums” as far as size and function go, but the names are still useful locally.
  2. Hillsdale and Muskegon Catholic are both rather small examples of secondary schools compared to the secondary school in Saline, MI for example, which also does not have the name “Hornet Stadium” on OSM associated with their American football playing/spectator area. So perhaps it’s not worth the trouble for instances of secondary schools?
  3. Given that some of these areas might be considered “sports centres” and others “recreation grounds” (or potentially even “stadiums” if you look at some American football fields in Texas) despite all generally being “facilities for the playing and spectating of secondary school sports”, is the ambiguity any cause for concern?

Appreciate any thoughts on the matter! It just happened that I was editing the area around Muskegon Catholic and wanted to include the name “Monsignor Kehren Stadium” to the area around the football field, and realized secondary schools do not commonly have these kinds of names attached to their facilities on OSM.

You can just add the name of the field itself on the leisure=pitch object, and encompass the field of play, bleachers and other parts of the area considered to be “the stadium” by a way tagged leisure=stadium.

This isn’t unlike pro stadiums like Arrowhead in Kansas City, which had a separate field name (“GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium”), or college stadiums such as Mississippi State’s Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field, where the pitch is tagged with name=Scott Field and the overarching stadium is name=Davis Wade Stadium (Way: ‪Scott Field‬ (‪191794074‬) | OpenStreetMap).

That they are unsophisticated doesn’t stop them being stadiums.

That said, one doesn’t call just any kick-ball pitch a stadium - it needs to have (more than a small number) seating and other facilities, which those locations seem to have.

Ah okay, I was under the impression the stadium tag was limited to professional/collegiate sports venues. Thanks you for the clarification!

Not at all limited to pro or NCAA facilities. In fact, I’ve seen photos of high school stadiums in Texas that are bigger than some Canadian Football League stadiums…
