A week ago we had a different post from someone who thought that openstreetmap.org was an usable map app. When I open the website front page with a fresh browser, I first see the welcome message
Welcome to OpenStreetMap! OpenStreetMap is a map of the world, created by people like you and free to use under an open license.
Nothing there indicates that OSM is primarily a map database, and not just the map product that loads in front of your eyes when you open the main page of the project. Why is it not indicated clearly that OpenStreetMap is not only that one map with the crappy search on the openstreetmap.org website? With the current design, when someone hears “you should try out OpenStreetMap”, they’ll Google it, open the website, see the lack of basic functionality, and leave thinking that OpenStreetMap sucks, instead of recognizing it as a technology that empowers the global geographic information ecosystem.
Should we finally address this? It’s off-topic for this thread.
