There is Sametinget, which is an organ of the Swedish state. It does not represent the Sámi nation as a whole. The same goes for each sameby. A poignant case is that of Vapsten, where the modern Vapstens sameby is in conflict with the historical Vapstens lappby. How do we map that? Should we map that?

The Swedish case is quite different from the North American case. I don’t think there exists any treaties as such. It is more the case that the Sámi have some rights that the Swedish state has not yet laid claim to, for example hunting and fishing beyond the agriculture border (odlingsgränsen), on which the Supreme Court of Sweden recently ruled in favor of Girjas sameby. That could be overturned by the Riksdag.

Sweden has received much international criticism for this state of affairs.
