The present samebyar and the historic samebyar (lappbyar) do not have the same boundaries, something that has caused some consternation. Compare historic Västerbotten (Relation: ‪Västerbotten‬ (‪6202854‬) | OpenStreetMap) with Västerbottens län (Relation: ‪Västerbottens län‬ (‪52825‬) | OpenStreetMap). We could add lappbyar relations as well I suppose, if there are good maps of them.

I am not sure if the Sámi have some form of government that is strictly their own. In Sweden there is Sametinget, but it is part of the Swedish state. Either way, having the samebyar boundaries machine readable is of everyday use to everyone living in Norrland, not just Sámi. It may become highly important if the Girjas verdict is found to also cover big game hunting, something that is fought over at present. If Google Maps etc don’t have these boundaries (which it doesn’t seem to) then OSM will be at the forefront with this.
