Road Classifications in Brighton

Hi all,
This has been bugging me for ages and thought I’d consult others on how this should be mapped before making any changes.
Brighton & Hove has several B roads which ought to be not mapped as “secondary” due to their limited access nature. Brighton & Hove City Council have changed limited the function of these roads over the past few years (or decades) to the point that they do not reflect what a secondary road should be in nature and therefor I’d suggest they should be mapped as “tertiary”, “residential” or “unclassified” as appropriate, similar to the A420 in Oxford.

The roads I’d like to highlight are:

  • B2119 Trafalgar Street. It is a narrow, partly one-way road with no connection to the classified road network on one end. It is unsuitable for traffic as there are lots of pedestrians due to the shops & cafes with narrow footways.
*B2066 from it’s junction with B2122 Eastwards to it’s former junction with the B2137. Between the B2122 to Regent Hill it is one-way for general traffic with a bus, taxi, cycle contraflow, with the general traffic usually due to accessing sideroads otherwise inaccessible. Between Regent Hill and Windsor Street (across the A2010) it is now bus, taxi & cycle only in both directions between 8am-8pm (I think for those times), and then Windsor Street to the A23 is one-way for general traffic with a bus, taxi & cycle contraflow. This makes the B2066 between the B2121 & A23 basically a bus, taxi & cycle only route with limited access for general traffic. East of the A23 the B2066 is part one-way and generally unsuitable for through traffic, especially when the C class “Eastern Road” & “Edward Street” handles actual traffic - these roads ought to be the B class road IMO. The B2066 randomly crosses north of Eastern Road before turning onto Bristol Gardens where it’s connection through to Roedean Road was severed a few months ago - marking following the B2066 impossible unless you are a NMU.

Those are the main two, however others, due as a knock on would be:
*B2121 as this did connect to the B2066, but doesn’t due to a new bus gates on it’s southern end.

Let me know your thoughts.

I don’t know these roads, but consensus seems to have settled on mapping by usage when that usage is different to the legal status. See: A420 Oxford dispute and Roads in the United Kingdom - OpenStreetMap Wiki.

Might be worth getting in touch with some local mappers and asking for their views on the roads above.
