RFC: Proposal for bulk name changing in Azerbaijan prepared with AI assistance

““binƏ” is the name of a village in Azerbaijan… the building in Azerbaijani is “binA’…”

This doesn’t change the fact that this element will have to be deleted outright instead of added to a name:xx= tag.

Menkaura, you have had two years now since I first raised these issues, to clean up your own edits that make Azerbaijan look like such low-quality data compared to other countries. You did not do so. It is inappropriate now for you to criticize other mappers who are taking steps to fix the thousands and thousands of incorrect name= tags that you have created over the years.

I’m not criticizing, I’m stating a fact: due to your ignorance of the local specifics of names and titles, you instantly confused everyone with your conclusions about “binƏ” and “binA”… and now imagine what the AI will do with the map of Azerbaijan if a decision is made to use it for mass editing… I’m simply sure that no one can guarantee that everything will go smoothly, and I gave an example of this above (for example, when the AI mistook the name of Emperor Domitian for the name of a settlement).. I’ll repeat again, due to the specifics of my profession, I constantly travel around Azerbaijan, I know every corner of it, I know it not by hearsay like you, but directly on the spot… and I personally (to be honest) don’t need this map at all… I’m trying to make things convenient for the citizens of my country, for ordinary Azerbaijanis… I already said - they make up 95% of this card’s users… and I won’t write anymore here, I’ve given my arguments, and I don’t want to repeat the same thing…

In this example on the photo name tag wouldn’t contain backslash before name of settlement

AI isn’t involved anymore

I had a private talk with @menkaura, he has promised to fix gradually(!) all his name tags with backslashes.

Also, I made a lot of changes myself, and already fixed majority of the names. I was doing that per each additional value in the name tag manually verifying that there is a settlement (or other place) of the same name nearby.

I started from the most popular, here is what left after the last iteration: osm_az_name_fix_validation - Google Sheets

The additional values which aren’t a place names and shouldn’t be just removed are more likely at the end of the table.

I confirm… we talked, discussed for quite a while… found common ground and interests, and I decided to take the recommendations into account and follow them… I will work on fixing them as much as possible… naturally, it takes time…
